DENIS WITTBERG

He is the figurehead of the Mainz Schellack Solists. Born in Wiesbaden in 1964, he began taking private singing lessons in 1981. Ever since his childhood, he has been passionate about the music of the 1920s and 1930s. For him, the legendary Comedian Harmonists were Germany’s first boy band. Following his early days performing at carnival events with well-known Mainz singing groups and an appearance on the television programme ‘Mainz bleibt Mainz, wie es singt und lacht’, he spent some time with the Mainz Theatre Choir. In 1997, he founded ‘The Roaring Twenties’ with his pianist Margitte Speiseder and made his debut performing songs from the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s. In the spring of 2003, the Schellack Solisten were formed around the singer. Denis Wittberg is the most stylish seduction since the ‘Roaring Twenties’. With charm, irony and great finesse, Denis Wittberg and his Schellack Solists guide the audience through the Berlin of the Golden Twenties, with its dance halls and variety theatres, back when Walter Jurmann, Peter Kreuder and Robert Gilbert were still writing the season’s top hits. To this day, Denis Wittberg and his Schellack Solists perform throughout Germany, delighting their audiences not only with hits from the 1920s and 1930s, but also with hits from the ‘Neue Deutsche Welle’ of the early 1980s, as this recording demonstrates.

JENS HUNSTEIN

The musical director and arranger of the Schellack Solists has a wide-ranging background:
As well as teaching and training (HfMdK Frankfurt, WMA, FMW) and successful musical youth work (prize-winner with the IKS Swingkids at the German Orchestra Competition in 2004, 2008 and 2012), he works as a freelance musician, arranger and musical director with many different ensembles and has been involved in over 85 theatre productions. Although his main profession is as a woodwind player (saxophone, clarinet, flute), with the Schellack Solists he pursues his passion for rhythm guitar.

JÖRG WALTER GERLACH

The artistic director and arranger of the Schellack Solists works as a pianist, film composer, arranger, music producer and musical director.
He has composed the music for numerous TV documentaries and provided musical direction for many theatre productions, most recently at the Luisenburg Festival. In doing so, he moves with stylistic confidence between various genres, from classical to rock.
He discovered his love for the music of the 1920s and 1930s as a child whilst rummaging through his parents’ collection of shellac records and has remained devoted to this music ever since.
